Wine Essentials

  • Cookshop 2625 Southeast 26th Avenue Portland, OR, 97202 United States (map)

Whether you’re brand new to wine or already the friend everyone asks for recommendations, this series is designed to deepen your understanding and enjoyment of what’s in your glass. Over four weeks, we’ll explore how wine is made, how to taste like a pro, and what makes wines from different regions unique - all in a fun, relaxed setting.

Each class combines approachable lessons with guided tastings of several wines that highlight a range of styles and qualities, focusing on both European classics and local Oregon and Washington gems. Expect plenty of conversation, questions, and “aha” moments along the way.

Come ready to sip, learn, and discover your new favorite wines!

What to expect:

  • Each class will include presentation of concepts and terminology, followed by comparative tastings of several wines selected to exemplify a range of wine styles and qualities.

  • Small snacks will be provided alongside wine tasting. Spitting is strongly encouraged!

  • Each class is focused around discussion of the wines tasted. Questions encouraged!

  • Price is per person, and includes all 4, two hour classes.

  • Class dates: Tuesday evenings, 1/6, 1/13, 1/20, 1/27

About our instructor:

Sébastien Rake grew up in Oregon, to a French mother and American father. He spent his twenties traveling and living abroad in France, Italy, South Africa, and British Columbia, discovering exceptional wines along the way.

After a brief career in architecture, he joined the world of wine professionally, where he worked in all aspects of the business, from production, hospitality, sales, and education. Today, he owns CorksCru Wine Merchant, a direct-to-consumer wine importer specializing in small, family-run European wineries.
